Over 50 million people worldwide have epilepsy. And over 40 percent of them have a form of the disease that doesn’t respond to medication – so they can get a seizure at any time. But most people don’t know how to help. An epileptic seizure can look worse than it is – it’s not an emergency and often only lasts a couple of minutes – but an epileptic still needs help to get safely through a seizure while it lasts. Therefore, we came up with the idea of Epilepsy Watch Out. A new feature for Apple Watch combining irregular heart rate detection with fall detection to identify an epileptic seizure. When a seizure happens, Apple Health enables Siri to speak out loud the steps of epilepsy first aid, helping to inform the people who are around about what is happening and what to do. In this way, we help both the epileptic and the people witnessing it getting through an epileptic seizure.
